Entered in experimental service in the early 1930s, the Zeppelin-Rotoraufklärer Type ZRA-31 represents a major technological break within the ZRA program. As the first fully electric and completely remotely piloted model, it definitively abandons the hybrid mechanical-thermal architecture of its predecessors in favor of silent propulsion and continuous remote control. Primary lift is still provided by a compartmented envelope—this time filled with helium for improved survivability. Unlike earlier variants, however, active lift and maneuverability are now handled by four small electric rotors arranged around the central gondola. This quad-motor configuration allows precise differential control of pitch, roll, and yaw, delivering unprecedented stability for an aircraft of this type. Each rotor is driven by an independent brushed electric motor, powered by a high-density alkaline battery pack housed in the lower structure. The complete absence of mechanical transmission drastically reduces vibration and improves the accuracy of the optical systems. The ZRA-31 no longer relies on a mechanical navigation drum. This is replaced by a continuous analog radio control system using vacuum-tube amplifiers and rudimentary command multiplexing. The operator gains direct control over the four motors, secondary aerodynamic surfaces, and gondola orientation. Visual feedback is provided by a mechanical radiovision system based on a Nipkow scanning disk, coupled with a gyroscopically stabilized front-facing opto-electronic camera. Although resolution remains low and the signal is prone to dropouts, the pilot now receives a continuous image of the terrain, enabling fine trajectory corrections and guided approach to designated targets. Depending on mission requirements, the Type ZRA-31 is produced in two standardized configurations reflecting distinct operational doctrines. ZRA-31/A — Support and Harassment This variant combines the frontal radiovision module with a stabilized light machine gun mounted beneath the central gondola. Intended for reconnaissance, harassment, and psychological support missions, it prioritizes endurance and firing stability. Thanks to its quad-electric layout, the operator can maintain a rough hover over target areas, allowing prolonged bursts against trenches, convoys, or fortified positions. Accuracy, however, remains dependent on radio conditions and image quality. Field reports confirm that the ZRA-31/A is used less for inflicting direct casualties than for disrupting enemy movement and forcing exposed units to disperse. ZRA-31/B — Light Strike The ZRA-31/B replaces the gun armament with a ventral release bay capable of carrying up to five compact explosive or incendiary charges, or a single fragmentation container. The drop system is fully remote-controlled and synchronized with the visual feed, allowing manual designation of impact points for the first time. Atmospheric drift and radio latency nevertheless impose a significant error radius, limiting effectiveness against small targets. This configuration is primarily employed against static objectives, troop concentrations, and light infrastructure. Regardless of configuration, operational endurance remains the platform’s primary weakness. Fully dependent on battery power, the ZRA-31 achieves an average flight time of 42 to 55 minutes depending on payload and weather. In the event of prolonged signal loss, the craft automatically enters a stabilized drift mode, maintaining approximate altitude until energy depletion. Test reports cite recurring radio blackouts, motor desynchronization in humid conditions, and several losses during missions beyond 18 kilometers. Despite these limitations, the ZRA-31 is regarded as the first true remotely operated combat aircraft of the modern era. Where its predecessors followed programmed sequences, the ZRA-31 now responds directly to human will projected across distance.
