Developed in response to the operational limitations of the ZRA-19, the Zeppelin-Rotoraufklärer Type ZRA-23 introduces radio-assisted control and an experimental real-time visual feedback system. The aircraft retains its mechanical navigation drum, now relegated to stabilization duties and emergency fallback protocols, while its control surfaces can be actuated remotely via electromagnetic relays. A forward-mounted optomechanical camera, coupled with a rotating scan disc, transmits fragmented imagery to the operator’s station via modulated radio waves. Although heavily affected by interference, this feed allows the pilot to adjust the craft’s trajectory under real operational conditions. A spark-gap transmitter-receiver enables reception of basic commands (nacelle movement, heading correction, interruption of automatic sequences, weapon activation), though direct and continuous piloting remains impossible. Originally conceived as a remotely operated reconnaissance platform, the ZRA-23 was soon assigned a secondary role in aerial harassment. Mounted beneath the ventral gondola, its twin light machine guns are not intended for precise engagement of point targets. Primitive radio control, optical latency, and imperfect stabilization render fine aiming impractical. However, the platform proves highly effective for area suppression. Operating at altitudes between 200 and 600 meters, the operator releases long bursts toward trenches, moving columns, or assembly zones. Accelerated by gravity, the descending projectiles sweep across the ground over several hundred meters, turning the affected area into an unpredictable corridor of fire. Actual lethality remains limited. Psychological impact, however, is considerable. The mechanical drone of the engine, the rising whistle of plunging rounds, and the appearance of the Zeppelin’s shadow over the lines induce panic, disorganization, and temporary abandonment of exposed positions. Affected units report a profound sense of helplessness against this airborne threat — difficult to locate precisely and nearly impossible to counter with small arms. Imperial general staffs classify these missions under the term Feuerstörung — disruption by fire. Field reports consistently note that the Type ZRA-23 kills less than it breaks morale.
