Developed in the urgency of conflict, the Zeppelin‑Rotoraufklärer Type ZRA‑19 is an unmanned aircraft designed for observing enemy lines and rapidly mapping the battlefield. It is a miniature airship, approximately 5 m long.
Its main lift is provided by a compact, compartmentalized hydrogen envelope, supplying the majority of the buoyancy but insufficient to keep the aircraft aloft on its own. A central combustion engine is therefore required to maintain flight, driving two lateral propellers that provide both horizontal propulsion and the necessary additional lift.
Navigation relies on a mechanical cam drum programmable before the mission. This system, synchronized with a gyroscope and a propeller rotation counter, executes a predefined sequence including ascent, heading, turns, zone overflight, and return. Fine corrections are handled by gyroscope‑controlled mechanical rudders.
The aircraft carries a film aerial camera mounted in an armored ventral nacelle, along with photographic sensors of varying focal lengths and sensitivities. Image capture is controlled by the cam drum, allowing both periodic shots and continuous recording over specific segments of the flight path. The film and data strips are physically retrieved at the end of the mission.
The Zeppelin‑Rotoraufklärer has no powered landing system. Mission duration is strictly limited by fuel capacity. When fuel is exhausted, the propellers stop and the aircraft gradually loses active lift. Guided only by residual gyroscopic stability, it slowly descends and lands near the return point programmed before launch.
Experimental Variant ZRA‑19/B
An experimental version, designated ZRA‑19/B, was developed for exploratory purposes. Intended to evaluate the platform’s offensive potential, this variant retains the general architecture of the reconnaissance model but features several notable modifications.
The ventral nacelle was modified to incorporate a small mechanical bomb cradle capable of carrying three micro-incendiary bombs, each weighing approximately 5 kg. These charges, stabilized by tail fins, are released individually by an additional cam system linked to the main programming drum, allowing drops to be synchronized with predetermined coordinates.
To compensate for the increased mass, the main camera was removed, leaving only basic photographic capability. The central engine received a modified carburetor to allow sustained operation under high load. Despite these adjustments, autonomy is reduced by approximately 18 % compared to the standard ZRA‑19.
Without radio control, offensive use remains strictly dependent on gyroscopic precision and prior calibration of the navigation drum. Tests revealed significant dispersion of impacts, worsened by high-altitude winds, limiting the tactical effectiveness of the system to area bombardment, primarily in urban environments.
About the 3D Model
This 3D model of the Zeppelin‑Rotoraufklärer is designed to naturally fit into dieselpunk and alternate-history settings, combining early 20th‑century engineering aesthetics with experimental technology. Its proportions and level of detail are specifically optimized for support‑free FDM printing, while remaining clear and readable for both gameplay and painting.
The model can serve as a central set piece, a flying unit, a reconnaissance drone, or a light attack platform, depending on your universe or house rules.
